METHOD Job shadowing

What does a job shadow look like?

A job shadow day is a one-on-one meeting with a person in your field of interest. Job shadowing can take place in two ways:

1. If the meeting takes place face-to-face, you will observe the working day of the person doing your field (4-8h). During job shadowing, you will get an idea of different aspects of their work – you will see the work environment, pace of work, colleagues, tasks, etc.

2. If the meeting takes place virtually, it lasts 45 minutes. To make your conversation meaningful and you get valuable information, prepare 10 questions.

3. Once you have booked an appointment, write to the job shadowing provider to agree on where you will meet. In the case of an online meeting, he will send you a link. Confirm that you have received it and that you are at the computer on time.

Students often ask such questions from those who do their field:

  1. What is your normal working day like?
  2. What do you like/dislike most about your job?
  3. What is the hardest part of your job?
  4. What is the biggest challenge you have faced at your job so far?
  5. What are the opportunities for development and promotion in this work?
  6. Is there anything you could have learned more to be ready for the job?
  7. What are the skills needed to do this job?
  8. Is there anything about this job that most people don't know?
  9. If you could choose again, would you choose the same occupation/field of work?
  10. What kind of education is needed to work in this position /field? Which schools have you graduated from?
  11. What schools/specialties would you recommend to be successful in this position/field?

How it all works Just 6 steps to a job shadowing day

See what needs to be done to shade your job.

  1. Choose a suitable job shadow

Look at all the job shadowing invitations that have been added to the Future Makers platform by those in their field, is there anything exciting to look out for?

  2. Book the job shadow

If you've found a suitable job shadowing, book one. After that, we will send you a confirmation letter with the contact information of the person you are shadowing.

  3. Prepare

We sent you sample questions to ask during job shadowing. Maybe you have something of your own that you'd like to know? Write it down so you don't lose your mind. You can also send questions to your shader in advance.

Once you've received an email invitation to meet online, accept it. Make sure the online meeting app (Zoom, Meets, Teams) is running on your PC. Confirm to the person being shadowed that you received the invitation and that you are there at the agreed time, and put a reminder on your phone about the event. If you have a concern, let them know or write info@tagasikooli.ee

  4. Reminder

We'll email you a reminder about job shadowing one day before it happens.

  5. Job shadowing day

YAY! Finally, that day has come! Ready? Went! Ps. Don't forget to take a picture of your job shadowing day and mark @tagasikooli when posting it. Be sure to write down what you did and how it went! You can also send a picture and a few lines of text to helena @tulevikutegijad.ee.

  6. We ask for feedback

After the job shadowing day, we will ask you three questions for feedback. Analyze what you learned from job shadowing and what benefits it was for you.

Experience stories How was the job shadowing day?

The professional I shadowed answered all my questions thoroughly, and in addition, he pointed out the difference between working in this specialty both in Estonia and abroad. The experience reassured me that this specialty is a perfect fit for me.

My job shadowing day took place virtually, but nevertheless it was a very memorable experience. The person I shadowed was very thorough and I gained a lot of new knowledge about this field.

Before I thought that job shadowing was the kind of passive shadow play where I watch a real person do his real work, but this in fact was not the case – I was the center of attention for Veiko Karu, not the shadow behind him. I felt more like a student being given a particularly awesome class, not like a shadow.
